Summer Hacks to Protect Color-Treated Hair

Finding that perfect hair color can be challenging. So, when you finally achieve it you need to make sure it lasts as long as possible! Summertime can be especially difficult because of all the elements that your hair is exposed to that can drain and fade your color. Stop washing your hair. Did that get your attention? What we mean by that is to wash it less often. Hot water not only strips your hair of its natural oils but it causes the color to fade as well. When you wash your hair, the shampoo and hot water open the cuticle of your hair, allowing dirt and excess oils to escape. However, over time you will notice that your perfect new hair color is escaping, or fading, as well. The average person only needs to wash their hair 2-3 times per week. 
 

Use only recommended hair care products. Our hair colorists will recommend the best products to use on your newly colored hair. This includes shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for color-treated hair, dry shampoo if you need for in-between washings, and even styling products can affect how long your hair color lasts. 
 

Protect against sun damage. You know what the sun can do to your skin, and that’s why you use sunscreen. You need to protect your hair from the damaging effects of the sun, too, which can not only dry out your hair making it brittle but can also fade your hair color. Use a sunscreen formulated for color-treated hair for spending time enjoying the summer weather. Covering your hair with a colorful scarf or wide-brimmed hat will offer protection to your hair, too. 
 

Keep up on your trims. Split ends and damaged hair has a tough time holding onto hair color, so it fades much quicker than healthy hair. When you keep up on your regular hair trims, it will ensure that your hair color will look fresher, brighter, and healthier for longer.
