The Perm is the Comeback Trend of 2022

Would you like to change up your style for 2022? If you’re tired of the hair you have or are looking to add some extra bounce to your already-existing curls, then why not consider getting a perm this year? We all know how popular perms were in the past, and retro is in with some modern twists, so we’re seeing the perm making its way back into the headlines.

Why get a perm?

I’m glad you asked! Perms are an amazing way to give yourself a new look as well as a new style. It’s a procedure that takes anywhere between an hour and a half to two hours, depending on your hair length and thickness. And if you’re someone who doesn’t want to commit to a single hairstyle for too long, our modern perming technology can leave it only semi-permanent so it will last anywhere from 2-10 months (depending on how you care for it, that is). Not to mention, the modern perm is a lot easier on your hair than it has been in the past.

What hair types can be permed?

Did you know that even people with natural curls can get perms? Yes! If you want tighter, more enhanced curls than your natural look, it is safe to get them permed. It’s not only for those with flat or straight hair. However, if you frequently color your hair or have had it bleached, you want to be careful. Bleached hair and perms don’t always mix well, so if this is you, you’ll want to have a consultation with your Meraki stylist before committing to an appointment. As for any of our hair coloring treatments, you’ll want to have that done either a couple of weeks before or after to keep your hair healthy. Wondering what type of curl to get? We have so many curl options that there’s sure to be one for you!

Can a perm damage my hair?

As long as you’ve had a consultation with your Meraki stylist beforehand, all will go smoothly. Hair that is in a healthy condition before being permed won’t experience any damage when done by our experienced hairstylists. A consultation will allow you and your stylist to determine what is best for the health of your hair, as well as plan how a perm will come out when completed. Hair that is damaged before being permed will be frizzy and can end up even more damaged than before. The solution could be as simple as a deep conditioning treatment with your Meraki stylist before the perm.

What to do after your appointment

After your hair has been permed, it will need time to set. You’ll want to leave it alone and not tie it up, wash it, or have any other type of styling done to it. You want to give all the chemicals 24-48 hours to lock in the curls. Washing it could cause the chemicals to deactivate and tying it up could ruin the shape. Your Meraki stylist will explain all the do’s and don’ts to ensure your curls last as long as possible - and this includes recommendations for the best professional haircare products to use in between salon appointments.
